The story:

  1. Vodka was regularly consumed by Russian people to celebrate new year. Some people may drink too much and became way too drunk. These people broke property which led to damage property and hurt the financial of business. This dish would help to reduce this problem and avoid financial losses.  

  2. Another story came from the time of communist regime. Each ingredient was a representative of the regime. The potatoes was a symbol of peasantry. The beet’s red colour is a symbol of Bolshevik flag. the salted herring is a symbol of proletariat. The food’s name came from acronym-ШУБА (Шовинизму и Упадку – Бойкот и Анафема) which was translated into english “death and damnation to chauvinism and degradation”. At the beginning, mayonnaise was difficult to find. This food was available for rich people and elites only.
